Before you book

Book the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums before you fly: in summer both sell out days ahead. The rest of the centre is walkable, and a lot of it, from Trevi to Piazza Navona, costs nothing.

How many days do you need in Rome?

Three days for the main sights, four with a day trip to Pompeii or Tivoli.

Do I need to book the Colosseum in advance?

Yes. Entry is by timed ticket, and summer slots go days ahead.

Ticket or guided tour: which is better?

A ticket is enough for the main levels. The underground and the arena floor are open only on tours.
